NOTE TO EDITORS:
The Mariner IV spacecraft will fly by Mars on Wednesday,
July 14. The encounter sequence will begin at approximately 7:00
a.m., PDT. Closest approach will occur shortly after 6:00 p.m.,
PDT. The 25 minute picture taking sequence will have occurred
prior to closest approach at 5:20 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Closest approach will be followed by the occultation
experiment when the spacecraft will fly behind Mars at about 7:30
p.m. and will be hidden from Earth for about an hour. As the
spacecraft emerges from behind Mars its radio signal will again
be picked up by tracking stations.
Transmission of the Mars pictures, which are recorded
on magnetic tape aboard the spacecraft as they are taken, will
begin some 10 hours later.
The press room in the Von Karman Auditorium at JPL,
will be opened at 9:00 a.m., Monday, July 12 and will be staffed
continuously thereafter.
